How to Choose a Dive Watch: Bezels, Lume, Crowns and What ISO 6425 Means

The dive watch is the most copied design in watchmaking, which means most watches that look like divers are not divers. A rotating bezel and a 200-metre marking on the dial can be styling rather than specification.
That does not make a dive-styled watch a bad buy. It is one of the most practical designs ever produced — legible, robust, comfortable, and appropriate almost anywhere. But if you intend to actually use it in water, it pays to know which features are doing work and which are decoration.
The standard: ISO 6425
There is an international standard for diver's watches, ISO 6425, and it asks for considerably more than pressure resistance. In outline, a watch sold as a diver's watch must have:
- A means of pre-selecting elapsed time — in practice a rotating bezel — that is protected against inadvertent rotation.
- Legibility at 25cm in total darkness, including a clear indication that the watch is running. This is why divers have a luminous marker on the seconds hand or bezel.
- Magnetic and shock resistance, salt-water corrosion resistance, and resistance to the strap or bracelet failing under load.
- Testing at 125% of the rated pressure, along with condensation and thermal shock tests.
Watches that meet it generally say so, in language like "diver's 200m" rather than "water resistant 200m". Seiko is explicit: the SRPE99 and SRPH55 are both described as following ISO standards and suitable for scuba diving. That phrasing is a meaningful signal.
A watch marked "200m" without a rotating bezel, screw-down crown or ISO reference has passed a pressure test and nothing more. Our water resistance guide explains why the rating on its own tells you less than you would think.
The features that matter, and why
A unidirectional bezel
This is the defining feature. A diver sets the bezel's zero marker against the minute hand at the start of a dive and reads elapsed time off the scale.
The bezel must rotate anti-clockwise only. If it were bidirectional and got knocked, it could rotate to show less elapsed time than has passed — which underestimates how long you have been down and how much air you have used. A unidirectional bezel can only ever err towards showing more time elapsed, which is the safe direction.
Check the wording. The Tissot Seastar 1000 specifies a uni-directional anti-clockwise rotating bezel. The TAG Heuer Aquaracer Chronograph uses a black ceramic unidirectional 60-minute bezel. Seiko's Prospex divers use one-way rotating elapsed-timing bezels throughout.
Ceramic bezel inserts are worth a premium if you can get them. They do not fade in sunlight and are far harder to scratch than aluminium — the Aquaracer Chronograph and the Seiko SRPH55 both use ceramic on a stainless steel case.
A screw-down crown
The crown is where water gets in. A screw-down crown mechanically compresses its gasket and, just as importantly, cannot be left half-open by accident. Every serious diver has one. The SRPD21J1, SRPE99 and SRPC25J1 all specify screw-down crowns and screw case backs.
The rule that follows: never operate the crown in water, and always check it is fully screwed home before you get in.
Lume that actually works
Legibility in darkness is a safety requirement underwater, and a genuine pleasure above it. Seiko's proprietary luminous material is Lumibrite, applied to hands and indices across the Prospex line. The Swiss equivalent is Super-LumiNova. Both charge in light and glow for hours; painted-on pale markings on cheaper watches glow for minutes.
Crystal
Sapphire resists scratches far better than mineral glass, and an anti-reflective coating on the underside genuinely helps legibility in bright light on water. The SRPH55 has sapphire with inner-surface anti-reflective coating. The SRPD21J1 and SRPC25J1 use Seiko's Hardlex, which handles impact well but marks more easily.
Strap security and extension
A bracelet that can be lengthened over a wetsuit sleeve is a real diving feature. Seiko's Prospex bracelets use a three-fold clasp with a secure lock, push-button release and an extender. Rubber straps are the practical choice for water — they do not absorb it, they do not stretch, and they rinse clean.
Movement: automatic or quartz
Both are legitimate underwater.
Automatic is traditional and needs no battery, so the case stays sealed. Seiko's 4R36 appears throughout the Prospex range with hand-winding, hacking, a day-date display and an approximately 41-hour reserve.
Quartz is more accurate, thinner and unaffected by being left in a locker for a month. The Tissot Seastar 1000 uses a Swiss ETA G10.212 quartz chronograph movement.
Solar removes the battery change without giving up quartz accuracy — arguably the ideal for a watch that spends time in salt water, since the case back never comes off. TAG Heuer's Aquaracer Professional 200 Solargraph is a 40mm example with 200 metres of resistance and a 12-sided unidirectional bezel. It is ex-display stock, which we explain here.
Size and the practical problem
Dive watches are thick, because pressure resistance needs metal. This is the most common reason a dive watch disappoints on arrival.
Seiko's Prospex divers listed here are 45mm in diameter and around 13.4mm thick. That is a substantial watch that will overhang a wrist under about 17.5cm and will not pass under a shirt cuff. The Aquaracer Professional 200 at 40mm is a much easier everyday size, and the Aquaracer Chronograph sits between at 43mm.
If you want dive-watch capability in a smaller package, prioritise diameter over rating: a 40mm 200-metre watch is more useful than a 45mm 300-metre one you stop wearing. The case size guide has a fuller treatment.
What about G-Shock?
Casio's G-Shock takes a different route to the same reliability. Rather than a heavy steel case, it uses a resin case and an internally suspended module. The G-Shock at 45mm is rated to 20 ATM — 200 metres — and is far lighter than any steel diver.
It has no rotating dive bezel, so it is not an ISO diver's watch, but for surfing, sailing, kayaking or anything involving impact, resin and a digital display are arguably the more sensible tool.

Living with one
Rinse the watch in fresh water after every sea swim, paying attention to the bezel and the gap between bracelet links — dried salt is abrasive and corrosive. Do not operate the crown or a chronograph pusher while the watch is wet. Have the gaskets replaced and the case pressure-tested every two to three years if the watch is used in water regularly, and always after the case has been opened.
