Watch Movements Explained: Automatic, Quartz, Eco-Drive and Solar

The movement is the engine of a watch. It is the single component that most affects how the watch behaves day to day: how accurate it is, whether you have to think about it, and what it will cost you to keep running in fifteen years' time. Two watches can look almost identical on the wrist and ask completely different things of their owner.
This guide covers the movement types you will actually encounter when shopping — mechanical and automatic, standard quartz, high-precision quartz, light-powered movements such as Citizen's Eco-Drive and Casio's solar calibres, and kinetic or hybrid systems. The aim is not to declare a winner. It is to let you match a movement to the way you actually wear a watch.
The two families
Every movement belongs to one of two families.
Mechanical movements keep time with a wound spring, a train of gears and an oscillating balance wheel. Nothing electronic is involved. The rate of the watch depends on the physical behaviour of a metal spring, which is why mechanical watches are measured in seconds gained or lost per day rather than per month.
Electronic movements use a battery or a capacitor to make a quartz crystal vibrate at a very high, very stable frequency — typically 32,768 times per second. A circuit counts those vibrations and drives the hands. Because the reference is electronic rather than mechanical, accuracy is an order of magnitude better.
Everything else — automatic winding, solar charging, kinetic generation — is a refinement layered on top of one of those two principles.
Automatic and hand-wound mechanical
A hand-wound mechanical watch needs winding, usually daily. An automatic adds a weighted rotor that spins as your wrist moves and winds the mainspring for you. Wear it regularly and it never stops. Leave it in a drawer and it runs down.
How long it runs unworn is the power reserve, and it is one of the most practically useful figures on a spec sheet. A watch you wear five days a week and take off on Friday evening needs a reserve comfortably beyond 48 hours if you want it still running on Monday morning.
The spread across Tickmere's automatic watches illustrates the point well:
- The Seiko 5 Sports SRPD61K1 runs Seiko's in-house Calibre 4R36 with an approximately 41-hour reserve. Wear it Monday to Friday and it will have stopped by Sunday.
- The Tissot Everytime Swissmatic offers 72 hours — enough to survive a normal weekend off the wrist.
- The Tissot Carson Powermatic 80 carries up to 80 hours, which is three full days plus a margin.
None of these is more accurate than a cheap quartz watch, and that is worth saying plainly. A good mechanical movement typically runs within roughly five to fifteen seconds a day of true time depending on calibre and adjustment. Over a month that is minutes, not seconds. People buy mechanical watches for the engineering, the sweep of the seconds hand and the fact that a serviceable mechanism can outlive its owner — not for timekeeping precision.
Two features worth looking for. Hand-winding capability lets you start a stopped watch without shaking it; Seiko's 4R36 has it, and many cheaper automatics do not. Hacking, or a stop-seconds function, lets you halt the seconds hand to set the watch precisely against a reference.
Magnetism and the modern balance spring
Magnetic fields are the most common cause of a mechanical watch suddenly running fast. Laptop speakers, handbag clasps and tablet covers are all routine offenders. Several current Swiss movements address this at source with a Nivachron balance spring, a titanium-based alloy far less affected by magnetism than traditional steel. Tissot fits it to the Powermatic 80 family, including the PRX 40mm and the My Lady Automatic. If you work surrounded by electronics, it is a genuinely useful specification rather than marketing.
Quartz
A standard quartz movement will keep time to within roughly ±15 to ±20 seconds a month. It needs a battery every two to five years and essentially nothing else. It is thinner, cheaper to make, more shock-resistant and far more accurate than any mechanical watch at the same price.
Quartz is the right answer more often than watch enthusiasts like to admit. If a watch is going to sit in a drawer for weeks and you want it correct when you pick it up, quartz wins outright. Tickmere's quartz watches run from simple three-hand pieces such as the Casio Edifice Classic Date at 42mm with 100 metres of water resistance, up to Swiss chronographs.
Two details worth knowing:
End-of-life indication. Many better quartz movements jump the seconds hand in multi-second steps when the battery is nearly flat, warning you before the watch stops. Tissot fits an EOL indicator across much of its quartz range, including the PRX 35mm.
High-precision quartz. Standard movements oscillate at 32,768 Hz. Bulova's proprietary movement runs at 262 kHz — eight times higher — which both improves accuracy and allows a much smoother-looking seconds hand. You will find it in the Bulova Icon 98B316, a 300-metre chronograph, and in the Lunar Pilot, where it drives a 1/20th-second chronograph counter that no mechanical chronograph can match.
Light-powered: Eco-Drive and solar
Light-powered movements are quartz movements that have solved the battery problem. A photovoltaic cell, usually hidden beneath a translucent dial, converts light — daylight or indoor lighting — into electricity, which charges a rechargeable cell rather than a disposable battery.
The practical consequence is that you stop opening the case. No battery changes means fewer opportunities for a badly reseated gasket to compromise water resistance, and no trips to a jeweller every three years. A fully charged movement will typically run for months in complete darkness, and most include a power-save mode that halts the hands while retaining the time.
Citizen's implementation is Eco-Drive. Tickmere's Eco-Drive watches include the Citizen Super Titanium AW1900-50L, a 40mm piece with a titanium case and bracelet and 50 metres of water resistance — a combination that makes for an unusually light watch you effectively never service for power.
Casio and others use the same principle under their own names. The Casio Edifice EFS-S650D is a 41mm solar chronograph rated to 100 metres. Among Tickmere's solar watches you will also find TAG Heuer's Solargraph movement in the Aquaracer Professional 200, a 40mm dive watch with 200 metres of water resistance and a sapphire crystal. Note that this particular piece is ex-display stock — we explain what that means rather than gloss over it.
One caveat: light-powered watches are not maintenance-free forever. The rechargeable cell degrades over many years and is eventually replaced during a service, though the interval is measured in a decade or more rather than in years.
Kinetic and hybrid movements
Between the two families sit movements that generate their own electricity from wrist motion. A rotor drives a tiny generator that charges a capacitor, which then powers a quartz circuit. You get quartz accuracy without a battery to replace, at the cost of a thicker case and a capacitor that will eventually need replacing.
These are a small and shrinking category. If you like the idea, the more common modern answer is a light-powered movement, which achieves the same "no battery changes" outcome with fewer moving parts.
Choosing, practically
Match the movement to your habits rather than to a hierarchy.

There is no need to be dogmatic. A collection of three watches containing one automatic, one solar and one quartz chronograph is a more useful set than three of any one type.
